Grassland birds are interesting summer visitors to our Ashland County Park, Byers Woods.  GMAS' name-sake, the  Bobolink is a showy bird which returns each year to breed on the grass covered mounds of this reclaimed land-fill..  Listed as birds in decline by Audubon National,  in Ohio as “regionally endangered,”  Greater Mohican Audubon Society will train their spotting scopes on these charismatic meadow-land babblers.  Come hear their characteristic “bubbling” calls as they wing across this capped landfill.  See these brilliantly colored Argentinian birds as they wing across the land-fill cells, and late June is an excellent time to view their fledglings as well.

Butterflies also abound on this diverse habitat  which incorporates woods, prairie grasses, a butterfly garden, and ponds.  It is an out-standing example of a creative use for a past land-fill site and Warren Uxley will present a program on butterflies and their host plants.  See which ones you'll want to feature in your garden!

GMAS members will set up scopes for your viewing pleasure, while park District volunteers grill hot-dogs.  Take a break and buy a cold drink.  Ashland  Chautuaqua will be presenting
Henry David Thoreau. Thoreau's passion for wildlife and conservation is the perfect compliment to this nature oriented event.  Bobolinks, butterflies  and sunshine are sure to complete the day !
